Enhancing a resource-efficient, circular economy, is one of the most important priorities for the industry. It plays a key role in food and drink companies’ long-term competitiveness and makes good environmental and business sense. Resource-efficient, circular economy in the food and drink industry means preserving the value of resources (raw materials, water and energy) that go into producing food and drink products for as long as possible.
Within this context, preventing food waste is a key priority for food and drink manufacturers and forms an important part in delivering a Circular Economy. Food and drink manufacturers in Europe understand the need to lead by example, and are actively working to reduce food waste in their operations and along the food chain most effectively through innovative supply chain partnerships.
As member of the Advisory board of the FAO-UNEP 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Food Systems, FoodDrinkEurope actively contributes to the goals of the program by accelerating the shift towards more sustainable food systems. Additionally, as a founding member of the European Food Sustainable Consumption and Production Round Table (SCP RT), FoodDrinkEurope has driven the development of an environmental assessment methodology for food and drink products (the ENVIFOOD Protocol) along with other food chain partners.
